DAY 1 On the Road

7:51 am - We planned to leave by 8:00, so we are right on schedule.  We managed to get everything packed, my yarn and all, with room to spare!  I’m sure it will be full by the ride home 😉

The day was slightly overcast, but that is Rick’s favorite type of weather to drive in since his eyes are very sensitive.  Our first stop to stretch and fill up on fuel was Arbor Vitae, WI.  Then, Durand, WI.  Our biggest surprise so far is that we are averaging about 18 miles to the gallon!  Woo Hoo!  Better than we anticipated.

Since this is a journey, an exploration, a “RoadTrip”, we opted to stay away from the freeways as much as possible.  We drove through small towns, along beautiful rivers and scenery that is giving way to spring.  The Chippewa River Valley was so beautiful and such a pleasant ride.  By this time the skies had opened up, the sun was shining and the snow was beginning to diminish.  We decided the first goal of this trip would be to located the point when we would finally see no more snow on the ground!

We crossed the Mississippi without issue.  We were blessed to avoid the flooded areas, but we did see some of the remnants of the damage all the water has created.  Next stop was Bevington, Iowa.  Stretch, walk, restrooms and fuel.  We stopped a Kum & Go.  Do not recommend this as an option.  We had thought we would eat at their little “restaurant”, but quickly changed our minds.  Our intent was to spend the night as a rest stop and continue on to Spring Hill, Kansas on Friday.  But next was locating a place for dinner.

At 5:34 pm, just south of Des Moines, Iowa, we began to notice that there was no longer white stuff along the sides of the road!  Yay!  Now our next goal is to find green!!

We stopped in Lamoni, Iowa at The Country Quilt Restaurant.  Quaint little diner, quilt and antique store. The food was wonderful!  And well worth the wait!  But the skies were still blue and we were about 2.5 hours or so from our next destination.  We decided to continue on and arrived in Spring Hill, Kansas, Rick’s brother’s house, a little before 9:00 pm.

This post is running late as we stayed up to the wee hours visiting and catching up...something we do not do nearly often enough.  It is wonderful that we are all independent and doing well, it is sad we are so far away that it is often many years before we are able to connect in person.  One of the last times we were able to all be together as a family was back in the early 90’s.  Since then, there is alway someone who can’t make it to whatever the event may be. Also since then our families have grown!  Thinking maybe our next goal should be to find a way to plan a reunion!  But we all know how those plans go.
